OTH: Your fans know you as Spencer from “Good Luck Charlie,” and now this is a new side they’re seeing. How does it feel going from an actor to a musician with his own album? What’s that transition like?
Shane: Well you know I’ve been doing music since I was really young and so I have been pursuing music for a while now. I played guitar when I was 8-years-old and I did musical theater and stuff, which I did at the age of 9. So I was singing, dancing and doing the acting stuff, but going from that show to getting played my song as Spencer in an episode was a really fun transition and it was awesome to play a song that I wrote in an episode ["One Step Closer"] and I think it was really special for me to go from the acting to the singing in the same episode.
OTH: What is your relationship with your co-star Bridgit Mendler you’re both on the same show, you’ve done a few songs together and she appeared in your music video for “Rocketship.” Are you guys friends or more than friends?
Shane: Yeah, I mean we were friends for the first couple of years working on the show, but around a year ago we actually started dating, but we were friends before so she’s also my best friend which is really nice, and you know a lot of people ask us during interviews and the whole cast is really close in general, you know? And we’re all good friends, Jason, Bradley etc. and Samantha Boscarino who played Skyler in a few episodes is Bridgits best friend and so we all hang out. We’ve been friends from the beginning and everyone has fun on set and it’s a great dynamic.
OTH: Your album has many different styles, you have some upbeat songs as well as some nice slow songs, now what artist(s) in particular did you have in mind when you were writing music? Because in one of your songs you reminded me of Coldplay.
Shane: Yeah, that’s awesome! That’s great and really flattering because they’re one of my favorite bands. When making my album, yeah they were in my head, as well as Jason Mraz was in mind and I love Coldplay so they were definitely in mind, Justin Timberlake was in mind. I love artists like Adele, John Mayer, and I also love one of my old school favorites and not a lot of people, my age at least know of him a lot, but Phil Collins. I’m a big fan of Phil Collins, he does great music, really cool Pop 80′s, you know? Drums/heavy music, which is really inspiring to me. I mean Coldplay, yeah I love that band and I love drawing inspiration from them as an artist.
OTH: Yeah I mean, when I heard your songs I kept getting Coldplay and then I looked up your videos on YouTube and you did a cover to their song “Paradise” which was unbelievable!
Shane: Haha! Thank you!
OTH: What do you have planned next? Are you planning on doing another album or are you going to be focusing more on acting and doing movies?
Shane: Yeah, you know we actually finished doing this record and now we’re doing shows. We’re hopefully going to tour during the summer with this album, but I did get permission to start writing another record, but I will be doing that as well. I’ll be making new music but I don’t know when we’re going to release it but we are going to start doing that and I’m also going to be doing acting because of “Good Luck Charlie,” we’re really busy on that show and I’m doing an episode this week and I’m doing an episode the week after. We’re on season three right now, we’re 14 episodes in and we’ve been working really hard on that, so I’ll probably be working on that for a while and hopefully they’ll keep having me back because I love working on that show. Yeah a lot of acting and singing that will be keeping me busy you know? Haha!
OTH: Haha yeah I know, busy life! – Now you have plans on touring correct?
Shane: Yeah we have that in mind, we’re doing a lot of fly-out things where I would fly out to a city and do a show, then fly back home, so it’s not really a tour but we’ve been doing that for a while and we’re looking to pin down a summer tour and so that’s in the process of being confirmed. We’re looking for a great summer tour to go out for in a month or two, with some other amazing artists that I could open for or headline with. That’s definitely in the works.
OTH: Yeah that be amazing! You should also plan a trip to come and perform here in Canada.
Shane: Yeah! I’d love to! I once played at a Canadian fair, Bridgit and I actually played at the fair, it was really fun!
OTH: Who would you like to work with on a song?
Shane: Ah this is a great question! There’s a lot of artists that I would love to work with but lately I’ve been thinking John Mayer, because I love his music and his guitar playing is incredible and I’m a guitarist myself but I would love to learn from him, you know in that way? Because he’s a brilliant guitarist and a brilliant writer and I think working with him would be awesome, I mean there’s many, many, wonderful artists that I would love to work with, but I think John Mayer is really up there.
OTH: Have you had any crazy moments on the set of “Good Luck Charlie?”
Shane: I remember for, I think Bradley’s birthday, I feel like I remember this funny moment where we surprised him in his dressing room and laughed at him when we sprayed him with silly string haha! I remembered that vividly, that was from season one, which is one that I found really funny, but we’re always goofing around and just having fun you know? It’s a great set, very friendly and we’re always having fun and joking around.
OTH: How did you land a role in the Bollywood movie, My Name Is Khan?
Shane: Yeah, that one was really interesting, I just auditioned for it and it was actually my agent who got me it and they set me up like all the others and I went in, read some lines and I got casted. I mean I was really stoked to do it because it was a really interesting opportunity because it was a foreign film and you know Bollywood movies are notorious in being huge, exciting, long and fun. They’re usually musical stuff but with the success of Slumdog Millionaire I think they wanted to go for a more dramatic non-musical story, which was really fun and I thought it was great! There were huge indian stars in it, you know? Like the Tom Cruise of Bollywood films, it was really cool!
OTH: If you had to pick out of acting or singing, which one would it be and why?
Shane: That’s a great question, and I get it all the time, just because everyone wants to know “what’s my favorite?” And it’s really hard because I love all aspects of the arts and I love to sing, love to act, love to dance and I even love to paint, I like to be creative no matter what it is, so it’s hard to pick one and I started of doing all of them with the acting, the singing and I danced professionally for a few years when I first started out in the business and I just think that I love to do all of them. Is that a bad answer? Haha I love to do all of them for as long as I can.
OTH: Haha that’s a good answer actually!… Seriously what can’t you do? You can sing, you can dance, you can act, you can PAINT! I can’t even draw stick men!
Shane: Haha!! There’s a lot that I can’t do, I’m not the best at sports I’ll tell you that. Haha! I mean if I tried hard enough I could get it but I’m not naturally great at sports. In terms of artistic things, I pick up on them fast and I really enjoy doing them; it’s fun!
